Australian awarded $7m for 19 years of wrongful imprisonment

David Eastman arrives at the Supreme Court in Canberra, Australia, 04 October 2019 (reissued 14 October 2019).

The Canberra Supreme Court on 14 October 2019 awarded David Eastman a compensation of 7.02 million Australian dollars (4.32 million euros) after he was wrongly imprisoned for almost 20 years for murder.

Eastman, 74, was found not guilty of Winchester’s murder at a retrial last year, as his first conviction was quashed in 2014 due to concerns about the original evidence.

He had pleaded not guilty in 1993 but received a life sentence two years later.
