Corporate Dispatch Malta Newspaper Review

Good morning,

These are the headlines from Malta’s Newspapers:

The Times reports that more than a hundred migrants at the Ħal Far open centre have been detained by police for involvement in a riot on Sunday night. The paper says the wreckage started when a drunk resident was denied entry by police officers.

The Independent says that some 300 migrants were involved in the Ħal Far open centre revolt in which a police officer was slightly injured. Rioters torched three cars and damaged a police vehicle.

L-Orizzont also leads with the arrests at the Ħal Far open centre and says that residents allegedly broke into offices, tearing up documents and setting them on fire. Police officers were met with flung rocks and glass objects.

In-Nazzjon covers the Opposition’s reply to the budget speech on Monday. Leader Adrian Delia said that the government created an imbalance between those who have a lot and those who have nothing. Delia also criticised the government for breaking over 100 promises and said that the PN is proposing 100 solutions to challenges faced by people.

The Independent also follows the Opposition Leader who questioned whether citizens are really enjoying the benefits of a growing economy. Adrian Delia said that economic performance is far outpacing salary increase.

The Times quotes Adrian Delia who said in parliament that the number of people at risk of poverty nearly reached 90,000, blaming government policies of importing cheap labour from other countries.

L-Orizzont carries the General Workers Union’s reaction to the Ħal Far riots, calling for better protection of Asylum Agency workers. Another article in the paper quotes National Statistics Office figures indicating a €236 million surplus by the government in 2018.
