China Effectively Bans Online Sales of E-Cigarettes

China issued its starkest warning yet over electronic cigarettes, calling on the industry on to stop selling and advertising the products online.

Citing health concerns for minors, a Chinese regulator and the state tobacco monopoly jointly urged manufacturers and sellers to shut down websites related to the marketing and sale of e-cigarettes, in what could amount to an effective ban.

The notice, which was dated October 30, was published one day later on the website of state monopoly China Tobacco, which is overseen by the country’s tobacco regulator.

China is home to over 300 million smokers, making it the world’s largest market for smokers.
