Gunman who killed four at latest US Navy base shooting was Saudi air force member

A gunman who shot dead four people on a major US Navy base in Florida was a member of the Saudi air force, the state governor has said.

The suspect was shot dead minutes after opening fire at Naval Air Station Pensacola on Friday, the US Navy and local sheriff’s office said. It is the second deadly shooting at a US military installation this week.

At least eight people were injured including two sheriff’s deputies who were the first to respond, one of whom killed the gunman.

Two law enforcement sources told CNN the shooter, who was killed, has been identified as Saudi Arabian national Mohammed Alshamrani.

The gunman started his training in August 2017 as part of a three-year program. He was taking classes in basic aviation, initial pilot training and English, according to a spokesperson for the assistant to the Secretary of Defense.

Officials are looking into whether the shooting was terror-related as a possible motive, but it’s still early in the investigation.
