AfD embraces mass deportation of migrants as German election nears

Germany’s far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), is on the rise, buoyed by recent regional successes and its radicalised agenda. At its conference in Riesa, Saxony, the party outlined plans to close borders, quit the EU and Euro, withdraw from the Paris climate accord, and reintroduce Russian gas imports.

AfD leader Alice Weidel publicly embraced the term “remigration,” advocating for large-scale deportations of individuals with migrant backgrounds. This marks a shift from her earlier distancing from the controversial concept, which critics argue is a euphemism for racist mass deportations.

The conference was met with thousands of protesters, whom Weidel dismissed as a “left-wing mob.” Her speech included promises to dismantle wind farms, exit the EU’s asylum system, and banish gender studies.

The AfD, polling second nationally and dominating in the east, remains isolated as other parties refuse to collaborate. Parts of the party have been classified as extremist by German intelligence.
