‘Baltic Way’ inspires ‘Hong Kong Way’ pro-democracy protests

A pro-China supporter holds Chinese flags as pro-democracy protesters take his photograph as they part in the ‘Hong Kong Way’ in Hong Kong, China, 23 August 2019. Citizens and protesters staged a ‘Hong Kong Way’ by forming a human chain in support of democracy.

The ‘Hong Kong Way’ is meant to be a salute to the ‘Baltic Way’ which took place on 23 August 1989, when some two million people from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania formed a human chain spanning 600km to strive for independence from the then-Soviet Union. Hong Kong has been engulfed in protests since early June 2019 that started by the now-suspended extradition bill but have since developed into an anti-government movement.
