Rían was the most popular name in Ireland for boys, while Lily was the most popular girls’ name last year, according to statistics from the Irish CSO.
The top five boys’ names in 2025 were Rían, while Jack moved from the top spot down to second place, followed by Noah, James and Oisín.
The top picks for girls’ names were Lily, Éabha, Fiadh, Grace and Sadie.
Information released by the Central Statistics Office show that names rising in popularity included Naoise, up 74 places to 88th place and Raya, up 114 places to 99th place.
New entries to the top 100 included Levi, Dáire, Naoise, Conall, Elijah, Teidí for boys, and Ríadh, Gracie, Mabel, Arabella, Nancy, and Raya for girls.
CSO records from 50 years ago indicate that parents had very different naming preferences, with John and Mary coming out on top in 1975.
Data on names given to newborn babies in Ireland goes back as far as 1964 .
Before digitisation, the data was manually typed from paper forms and would not be as comprehensive as the data the CSO has over the last number of years.
