Bodies of twenty lifeless persons recovered after latest migrant tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea

The bodies of 20 persons were recovered on Wednesday following the sinking of a fishing boat carrying irregular migrants.

A search is underway for 30 others who are believed to have set off for Italy last Thursday night.

According to Tunisian coast guard officials on Tuesday recovered the bodies of 20 people they said were migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who had drowned after a shipwreck off the country’s east coast.

Mourad Tourki, a spokesman for the court in the coastal city of Sfax, said an investigation was underway into the incident, which happened off the Kerkennah Islands.

‘The death toll will certainly be higher, but at the moment it is not known exactly how many people were attempting the crossing – Romdhane Ben Amor of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (Ftes) said in a statement. ” We contest the attribution of the origin of people only on the basis of their color. There are also Tunisians with black skin. In the meantime, Ftdes accused the European Union’s non-reception policy in a statement, ” willing to do anything to prevent the arrival of migrants.

Last month, at least one person drowned and six were missing after another migrant shipwreck off the Tunisian coast. Over 80 people were rescued.

According to the UN refugee agency, the number of attempts to reach the Italian coast from Tunisia was significantly higher in the first four months of 2020 than in the same period last year.
