Couple who survived the Morandi bridge collapse gets married

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Just a little more than a year after the collapse of the Morandi bridge, Eugeniu Babin and Nataliya Yelina, survivors of the collapse of August 14, 2018,  got married in Naples, as they had promised themselves after having escaped the atrocious event that cost the lives of 43 people.

It was a rather difficult year for the couple who had to undergo a series of operations, therapy and rehabilitation, until finally they managed to get to the altar and honour their promise.

At least 22 people are believed to have died as a large section of the Morandi viaduct upon which the A10 motorway runs collapsed in Genoa on Tuesday. Both sides of the highway fell. “We did it”, said a very happy Eugeniu when speaking to Fanpage. “It is an important day because it is a step forward that helps us psychologically and physically. Besides, after what it happened to us, there had to be some happiness in life “.

“It is a day full of meaning, long-awaited above all”, commented Nataliya, very excited and dressed in white. “Today we can finally hear our mass on our legs and this means that we are doing it, we are going forward”.

The couple was traveling to France and was crossing the Morandi Bridge by car when suddenly there was the collapse of the viaduct. The collapse made them fall into the void from a height of eighty meters.

“Our biggest fear was that they didn’t find us,” they said.  Eugeniu honked the horn until it was discharged. Then they started shouting, until the arrival of the Fire Brigade, who managed to extract them from the accumulation of debris.

Once in hospital, despite the serious fractures, they found the strength to post a short video on Facebook to reassure friends and relatives and thank doctors and rescuers.

The announcement of the wedding came precisely from that hospital room: after thirteen years of union and the narrow tragedy, they decided it was time to get married.
