A coalition of right-wing Italian parties looked set to win a regional election in Abruzzo Sunday, which pit the country’s ruling parties against one another, according to early projections.

The right-wing alliance which includes the League, the Brothers of Italy and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia was forecast to win 48.9 percent, with a center-left coalition coming in second place at 28.7 percent, according to the projections by SWG for La7 television. The League is projected to win over 27 percent of the vote, effectively doubling last year’s general election result.

The anti-establishment 5Star Movement, which in the general election 11 months ago won 40 percent of the votes in the region, was predicted to perform worse than expected, coming in third at 21.2 percent, rather than second place as polls had predicted.

Projected turnout was about 53 percent, some 8 points lower than in the last regional election in 2014.

The contest in the small mountainous region to the east of Rome is the first in which the 5Stars and the League have competed against each other since they teamed up to form the national government last June.
