ECB President Lagarde announces early resignation

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has announced she will step down on 7 February 2027, before the end of her term.

The ECB said Lagarde had informed its Governing Council and European Council President António Costa of her decision. Costa said the process to select her successor would begin immediately.

The announcement comes ahead of a key ECB meeting this week, expected to focus on France’s deteriorating public finances.

No official reason has been given for Lagarde’s early departure. However, speculation suggests she may be leaving early to allow EU leaders to appoint her successor before French elections, in which a far-right victory could influence the choice.
