EU adds pressure to end Libyan conflict

The EU delegation in Libya has urged battling militias in Tripoli to end the conflict which “has caused civilian fatalities”. “The solution to the Libyan crisis remains political, not military,” the EU delegation said in a statement. “All those responsible for violating the ceasefire or fueling violence will face consequences.”

Earlier this month, the UN reported that several armed militias fighting in the capital had agreed to a ceasefire with the government. Yet many observers have described the ceasefire as fragile due to the lack of government influence in the region leading to the tender nature of the ceasefire. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres raised his concerns regarding “the increasing number of violations of the ceasefire agreement signed by armed groups,” according to his spokesman.

Armed militias have been locking horns for more influence since 2011 when the uprising-turned-civil war witnessed NATO involvement. Former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown and subsequently executed by rebels. Instability in Libya has turned the North African state into a hub for drug and human trafficking.
