EU invests €7.3B from Horizon Europe to boost competitiveness and talent development

The European Commission is investing over €7.3 billion in the 2025 Horizon Europe work programme to boost research, innovation, and global competitiveness. This funding supports the EU’s green and digital goals, with 35% allocated to climate action and 36% to digital projects, including AI and clean transport. The programme aims to attract top researchers through initiatives like the new MSCA ‘Choose Europe for Science’ pilot, which offers better support and longer contracts. Special efforts target Ukrainian and Gazan researchers, alongside broader goals to simplify applications and reduce administrative burdens. Key focus areas include automotive innovation, cybersecurity, sustainable living via the New European Bauhaus Facility, and support for early-career scientists. A €500 million package for 2025–27 further promotes Europe as a global hub for talent and innovation. The first funding calls open on 15 May, with continued simplification planned through 2027.
