EU Member States divided over Gaza at Copenhagen meeting

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has admitted that the European Union’s failure to reach unity on Gaza is both personally difficult and damaging to the bloc’s global credibility. Speaking after an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen, Kallas said the ongoing division undermines the EU’s ability to act decisively on the international stage.

“It is hard for me personally, because as the face of this process I am seen as responsible when there is no decision. That is very difficult,” she said. Kallas explained that member states remain split on how to pressure Israel to change course, despite a clear set of policy options being presented.

One of the most contentious issues is whether to suspend free trade with Israel under the EU-Israel Association Agreement. While Denmark, currently holding the rotating presidency, signalled its support for suspension, countries including Germany and Hungary voiced opposition, leaving the EU without consensus.
