EU says trade deal with Trump was best it could do

Brussels has defended its last-minute trade agreement with Washington, which imposes a 15% tariff on most EU goods—down from the 30% threatened by Donald Trump. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen secured the deal during a brief meeting at Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland, just days before the August 1 deadline.

EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič called it “the best deal we could get under very difficult circumstances,” stressing it safeguarded EU jobs and maintained U.S. military support for Ukraine and NATO.

While leaders like Germany’s Friedrich Merz welcomed the outcome, France reacted angrily. Prime Minister François Bayrou called it “submission,” and industry lobbies warned of a “disastrous impact.” Critics accused Brussels of caving in, branding the EU an “economic giant but political dwarf.”
