EU to create space single market

The EU plans to create a ‘space single market’ to enhance supply chain reliability and reduce dependency on foreign countries, the European Commissioner for Space announced on Tuesday.

While the EU is home to advanced space programmes like Galileo, which provides navigation services used by billions of devices, many European space projects still rely on foreign supply chains, particularly for launchers to send them into space.

Through its proposed Space Industrial Strategy, the EU aims to boost research and development and encourage production, positioning Europe as a leading exporter of space technology.

“Supply chains either never existed or have been disrupted by COVID and Russia’s war in Ukraine,” said Andrius Kubulius, European Commissioner for Defence and Space, at the European Space Conference in Brussels.

His remarks highlight the need for a more unified European space industry, with a focus on key landmark projects, according to Martin Sion, CEO of French aerospace company Ariane Group.
