EUROCONTROL, the intergovernmental organization responsible for coordinating Europe’s air navigation, has unveiled a significant upgrade to its European Aeronautical Information Database (eEAD) under the agency’s Integrated Network Management (iNM) initiative.
The revamped eEAD, powered by Microsoft Azure, provides airlines and air traffic operators with near real-time data on network changes. The enhanced visibility aims to improve flight planning, boost operational efficiency, and reduce delays across European airspace.
“Stakeholders can now access, analyze and respond to live data faster — leading to a safer, smarter and more sustainable European air network,” said Marijke Schroos, general manager of Microsoft Belux.
This system serves as a cornerstone of the iNM program, designed to modernize traffic management with advanced digital tools. The Azure cloud platform offers a scalable, resilient, and secure infrastructure to support critical aviation functions.
Deployment is underway in stages, with data feeds gradually transitioning to the new platform. Once fully implemented, all EUROCONTROL Aeronautical Information Services will be fully integrated into this modern digital framework supporting eEAD.
Key Takeaways:
The modernization effort is part of EUROCONTROL’s broader iNM strategy to increase the efficiency and sustainability of European air travel.
Microsoft Azure’s support provides robust cloud capabilities critical for a resilient aviation data backbone.
Rollout is phased; initial migration has begun, and full integration is expected once all data providers complete the switch to the new system.
Background on EUROCONTROL and iNM
Founded in 1960 and headquartered in Brussels, EUROCONTROL oversees air navigation and flow management across 42 member states. Its mission is to maintain safety and efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
The iNM initiative, part of the broader Single European Sky effort, aims to replace legacy systems and foster a fully integrated digital management environment across Europe.
Outlook
EUROCONTROL’s new eEAD is expected to strengthen operational decision-making, enhance planning flexibility, and contribute to a more resilient air traffic network. As digital migration proceeds, the organization projects improved performance and reduced departure and en-route delays, reinforcing its vision of a safer, greener, and more agile European airspace.
