MEPs to Get Official AI Platform Amid Concerns Over AI-Generated Laws

As more MEPs and parliamentary staff turn to artificial intelligence to draft speeches, parliamentary questions and legislative amendments, the European Parliament is preparing to launch its own official AI platform to encourage secure and responsible use of the technology, according to Politico.

The platform, known as EPGenAI Hub, will provide access to AI models developed by Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic and France’s Mistral. It is designed to offer a secure alternative to public AI tools, reducing the risk of sensitive parliamentary information being shared on external platforms. The system is currently being tested and could begin rolling out from September, Politico reported.

The move follows growing concern within the Parliament over the increasing use of AI in legislative work. Committee chairs have reportedly raised concerns that some MEPs and their assistants are relying on AI to draft amendments and other parliamentary documents, with fears that inaccurate or fabricated information could find its way into official texts.

Brando Benifei, the MEP who led negotiations on the EU’s AI Act, warned that Parliament “has not been immune to AI slop and misleading AI-generated content” and said lawmakers should lead by example as the bloc’s transparency rules come into force.

Around 2,100 people, or roughly one-fifth of Parliament staff, already use AI daily. While staff are required to label AI-generated work and avoid entering sensitive information into public AI systems, no such disclosure rules currently apply to MEPs.

Irish MEP Barry Andrews acknowledged that many lawmakers are using AI to cope with heavy workloads but argued that drafting speeches, questions and amendments remains “a core democratic function” that elected representatives should perform themselves.
