This is a summary of Politico’s projections for the voting today in Romania:
Romania – The Projections
If turnout of 33.67% is maintained in this vote, Politico predicts PNL will beat second-placed PSD by 175,273 votes. That is just 1.39% of the 12,654,445 expected non-voters.
Romania – The Issues
The May elections are widely seen as a referendum on the popularity of the ruling Social Democratic party (PSD), which has got through more than 70 ministers, including three premiers, in the past two years.
At the centre of the drama is increasingly populist PSD leader Liviu Dragnea, who cannot serve as premier because of a corruption conviction, and is believed to have encouraged the ruling coalition to backtrack on crucial anti-corruption measures.
