Britain, France and Germany triggered a mediation process aimed at forcing Iran to return to compliance with limits placed on its nuclear program, or potentially face the reimposition of international sanctions.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany said they had no choice but to take action after the escalation of the conflict between Iran and the U.S., in which Trump ordered the killing of a top Iranian general, and Tehran announced that it was discarding more key components of the nuclear deal — including a limit on centrifuges. The Iranian government issued a statement saying its nuclear program “no longer faces any operational restrictions.”
As a result, the European leaders said they could not credibly continue to try to save the agreement without triggering the dispute resolution process.
“We have therefore been left with no choice, given Iran’s actions, but to register today our concerns that Iran is not meeting its commitments under the JCPOA and to refer this matter to the Joint Commission under the Dispute Resolution Mechanism,” the ministers said.
