Roberta Metsola is in London on an official visit to strengthen EU–UK relations. During the visit, she held a series of high-level meetings with British leadership.
In a meeting with Keir Starmer, Metsola emphasised that, ten years after Brexit, the relationship must reflect today’s realities. Both leaders agreed that future cooperation should be built on stronger, mutually beneficial links. “With a world seemingly on fire, a stronger, closer relationship based on pragmatism is in everyone’s interest. Geography has not changed, even if politics has,” Metsola said.
She also met David Lammy to discuss security, trade, and youth mobility, underlining the importance of European security, particularly given the war in Ukraine. She welcomed the UK’s return to the Erasmus+ programme from 2027 as an investment in the next generation.
At the House of Commons, Metsola was welcomed by Sir Lindsay Hoyle to discuss parliamentary cooperation and shared democratic values. She also addressed the Maltese community at the Malta High Commission, praising the diaspora as vital ambassadors whose success contributes to Malta’s success.
Writing in The Telegraph, Metsola called for Britain and the EU to go “even further” than the current Brexit reset, urging deeper economic, energy and defence ties. She invoked Margaret Thatcher’s belief that sovereign nations should co-operate pragmatically and highlighted ongoing European discussions on proportionality, Regulatory Technical Standards, and AML supervision. While stopping short of advocating EU membership, she stressed that a closer, practical partnership benefits both sides, cutting unnecessary red tape and supporting growth through enterprise and innovation.
