Far-right Alternative for Germany leads opinion poll for first time

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) on Wednesday finished top of a German opinion poll for the first time, hours before the next governing coalition in Berlin was set to be agreed.

The landmark Ipsos poll found the AfD on 25%, ahead of the conservative bloc – made up of Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Bavaria-only Christian Social Union (CSU) – on 24%.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) was in third on 15%, with the Greens and The Left both on 11%.

The historic poll comes six weeks after the AfD finished second in parliamentary elections.

The CDU/CSU and SPD are expected to reach a deal to form a government on Wednesday.
