Father and son suspected in Bondi Beach Hanukah attack

Police say the alleged gunmen behind the deadly Bondi Beach attack were a father and son who are suspected of using legally obtained firearms.

Naveed Akram, 24, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital in critical condition. His 50-year-old father, identified by Australian media as Sajid Akram, was shot dead by police. The pair are alleged to have killed 15 people and injured dozens more during a gathering marking the first night of Hanukah on Sunday.

Authorities said the son was known to New South Wales police and security agencies, while his father held a valid firearms licence with six registered weapons. Four long firearms were seized at the scene, with the remaining weapons recovered during raids at properties in Campsie and Bonnyrigg.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Naveed Akram had previously been assessed by security agencies but was not deemed an ongoing threat. Police said there was no prior indication the attack was being planned.
