An undated photo released by the official North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, riding a white horse through the first snow of Paektu Mountain, in Ryanggang, North Korea.

Analysts say such gestures have been known to precede major announcements by the North Korean leadership.

The mountain holds a special place in the country’s identity and is feted as the birthplace of Kim Jong-un’s father.
