Gdańsk votes to replace murdered mayor

Radio Poland reported that the northern Polish city of Gdańsk is holding an early election Sunday for the post of mayor.

The ballot had to be organised after former city mayor Paweł Adamowicz died in January from wounds inflicted by a man armed with a knife during a high-profile annual fundraiser. He died in hospital a day after the attack.

Three candidates are contesting the post: Gdańsk acting mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz from the Everything for Gdańsk committee, filmmaker Grzegorz Braun and Marek Skiba from the Responsible-Gdańsk committee.

In the event of the second round of the ballot, the runoff will be held in two weeks.
