Genoa Bridge collapse possibly caused by a 3.5 tons roll of steel falling from a truck

‘At first I thought that the cause of the collapse of the Morandi bridge was the corrosion of the stays. Then seeing some videos I started to speculate that collapsing the viaduct may have been the fall of the steel roll carried by the truck passed a few seconds before”.

This was stated by Agostino Marioni, former engineer of the company Alga who took charge of the reinforcement work on the pile 11 in ’93, heard as a person informed of the facts in the power of attorney.

“According to the calculations I made – said Marioni – if the truck, which traveled at a speed of about 60 kilometers per hour, had lost the roll weighing 3.5 tons would have given off a kinetic force equal to a cannon. simple: just check if there are traces of asphalt on the reel “.
