Greek’s centre-right ahead in EU elections

New Democracy’s local EPP affiliates stand out as one of the leading ruling parties in the EU, according to the latest polls ahead of the European elections. Greece’s current centre-right government under Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakis has maintained its popularity, a year after the national elections.

Nea Demokratia, affiliated with the European People’s Party in Greece, leads in polls among Greek citizens, as indicated by the Euronews superpoll. This exceptional performance is noted in contrast to the trend across Europe, where most ruling parties are expected to face losses.

The moderate conservatives significantly outpace their leftist and centre-left counterparts, with Syriza and PASOK ranking second and third in the superpoll, respectively. The gap between the Centre-Right and Syriza’s candidate Stefanos Kasselakis exceeds 20 percent. Meanwhile, Syriza and PASOK engage in a competitive struggle for electoral support.

Although PASOK has slipped from its previous second-place position according to the early May superpoll, it continues to vie fiercely with its leftist rivals. The Greek Communist Party (KKE) participates as a minority contender amidst the left’s internal competition.

At the EU parliament level, the Greek left’s spectrum—from centrist to radical—is divided among different groups. Syriza aligns with the European Left group, PASOK with the Socialists and Democrats group, while the KKE is part of the Non-Attached group, reflecting the broader fragmentation within Greek left-wing politics.
