Hamas ‘very close to an agreement’ with Israel, official says

Hamas is reportedly nearing a ceasefire agreement with Israel involving a hostage exchange for Palestinian prisoners, according to a militant group official. Both Israeli and US officials have also acknowledged progress in the Doha-hosted negotiations.

US Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer told CNN that significant strides have been made, though he stopped short of predicting an outcome. “There is a deal on the table that Hamas should accept,” he said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar affirmed that Israel is actively pursuing a deal. “Israel wants a hostage deal and is working closely with our American friends. Soon, we will know if the other side wants the same,” he said in a Jerusalem press briefing.

Despite advancements, key obstacles remain. Hamas demands Israel withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egypt-Gaza border and commit to a permanent ceasefire, rather than a temporary halt to military actions initiated after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, assault on southern Israel.
