Historic church’s roof caves in, in Rome

The roof of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, a historic church built on the remains on an ancient prison on Rome’s Capitoline Hill, caved in suddenly on Thursday, causing severe damage but no injuries.

Italian firefighters said the roof of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami church in Rome caved in and damaged the chapel below it on Thursday. The church, which is a popular draw for tourists and a favorite location for wedding couples, was closed to visitors at the time of the collapse.

Social media users shared photos and videos showing the scope of the damage.

While authorities said there no one was reported injured, rescue teams deployed sniffer dogs to make sure no one was trapped under the rubble.
