Houthis say they targeted the Mediterranean this week, no confirmation available

The leader of Yemen’s Houthis, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, said that one of their operations this week targeted the Mediterranean Sea.

Earlier this month, al-Houthi had said that all ships heading to Israeli ports would be targeted by the Iran-backed group, not just those in the Red Sea region which it has targeted before.

No incident from the area was reported this week, and Reuters could not independently verify the contents of the statement.

A senior Pentagon official this week said the US has seen no sign the Iran-armed rebels have attempted to do so yet, but admitted to being worried about the possibility.

“The Houthis have an advanced array of weaponry,” the senior US defense official speaking on the condition of anonymity told reporters during a diplomatic visit to the region on Monday.

“They have weapons that could reach the Mediterranean,” the senior official said. “It definitely is of concern that they have that capability.”
