Despite being suspended from the European People’s Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament, MEPs from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz have not been suspended from the group.
Fidesz has 12 MEPs in EPP among them József Szájer, vice chair of the EPP group who acts as its chief whip.
The EPP alliance suspended Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán’s Fidesz party last week in a move intended to strip the party of its voting rights in the EPP.
But Esteban González Pons, one of the EPP group’s vice chairs, pointed out that there was no request to suspend any of the Fidesz from the grouping, stressing that the parliamentary group is something different than the party.
