Italian security forces break up international petrol trafficking gang

An alleged criminal organization operating in various Italian provinces and specializing in the international traffic of petroleum products was targeted in an operation coordinated by the Guardia di Finanza of Trento.

During the operation, nicknamed  ‘Turpis Oleum’, 49 people were reported for smuggling and 160 tons of diesel were seized.

Investigators ascertained that, between 2015 and 2019, the gang illegally imported from Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic over two million liters of poor quality petroleum products, destined for the national underground market, in Campania, Puglia, Lazio, Abruzzo, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Lombardy.

Once the product arrived in Italy, it was mixed with modest quantities of diesel fuel generating a product that, although suitable for traction, was of very low quality and harmful to new generation vehicles. The verified excise duty evasion is equal to almost 2 million euro.
