In Messina and its surrounding areas, the intense rainfall has caused widespread damage and inconvenience. Numerous incidents of flooding, fallen trees, landslides, and mudslides have been reported throughout the city and province.
The southern part of Messina has been particularly affected, with villages such as Mili, Altolia, Cumia, and Ponte Schiavo experiencing significant challenges. In Zafferia, the local stream overflowed, trapping several families in their homes and sweeping away vehicles. Emergency services, including the fire brigade, have been actively responding to over 50 incidents across the province, with an additional 60 interventions currently underway. The municipal operations center in Messina has been activated to coordinate the response efforts.
The adverse weather conditions are attributed to a low-pressure system moving from Tunisia towards the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. This system is causing increased wind activity and significant instability, initially impacting Sicily and subsequently extending to Sardinia and other southern regions of Italy.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution, stay updated with official weather advisories, and adhere to any safety instructions issued by local authorities.
