Italy has witnessed yet another decrease in its death toll: 433 passed away today, taking the tally to 23,660. New cases have also gone down with 3,047 identified today, that’s some 400 less than yesterday).
The Civil Protection welcomed the fact that more than 2,000 persons have recovered, while it also reported a decrease of persons requiring intensive care, a figure which has gone done by 98 in just a day. Despite this flurry of positive news, Walter Ricciardi, a WHO official, and consultant to the Italian Ministry of Health insisted that “it was too early to start the second phase of easing of restrictions”.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, after a meeting between Government and local representatives, wrote on Facebook that”Local governments have expressed support to a national plan where there will be the same guidelines across all regions” with regards to the easing of restrictions.
Conte insisted that despite the fact that the current numbers were a clear indication that the country was managing to contain the virus, it is way too early to ease the directives which have been imposed so far and that la ripartenza (technically – the restart), will start as of 4th May. Conte also re-affirmed that this process will require consultation with all social partners and trade bodies to ensure safety at workplaces, while ensuring that smart working continues to play an important role in this recovery.
