Japan marks ninth anniversary of earthquake and tsunami without ceremony

The Japanese government was forced to call off events and its memorial service, marking the ninth anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in north-east Japan that killed more than 18,000 people, in fears of coronavirus outbreak, instead the people will honour the victims by laying flowers or releasing balloons.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he will observe a moment of silence at the time the earthquake struck off and will also deliver an address from his official residence on 11 March 2020.
