Johnson warns NATO members not to “shy away” from emerging threats

Boris Johnson has warned NATO members they must not “shy away” from discussing emerging threats, after Emmanuel Macron defended his warning that the alliance was suffering from strategic “brain death”.

The prime minister has attempted to encourage harmony among his fellow world leaders after a tetchy first day of the anniversary summit in London, marking 70 years since the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in 1949.

Representatives from all 29 member states have gathered at The Grove hotel in Hertfordshire, where Mr Johnson stressed the importance of the alliance in an opening speech.

Echoing the famous phrase from The Three Musketeers, Mr Johnson told the presidents and prime ministers present that it was “all for one, one for all” in their quest to keep their people safe.

He said members remained “rock solid in our commitment to NATO”, but also warned that the alliance must not underestimate new threats – citing “hybrid warfare and disruptive technologies including space and cyber”.
