Lawsuit seeks to undo 15-week abortion ban that conflicts with expanded access in Arizona

Reproductive rights advocates are challenging Arizona’s 15-week abortion ban, which clashes with a newly established constitutional right to abortion in the state. In November, voters approved a ballot measure allowing abortions up to fetal viability, typically around 21 weeks, according to doctors.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, and the Center for Reproductive Rights filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in Maricopa County Superior Court on behalf of Planned Parenthood Arizona and two physicians.

Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes has stated her office will not enforce the 15-week ban while the case is ongoing. Meanwhile, opponents of the ballot measure have indicated plans to intervene where possible.
