Lithuania to deploy troops to Belarus border amid increase of migrants

Lithuania will deploy additional military personnel to its border with Belarus in response to a rise in the number of irregular migrants attempting to cross from the neighbouring country.

“We’ve agreed with the Lithuanian Armed Forces on the deployment of additional troops along the border with Belarus, in the Varėna Frontier District, starting today,” State Border Guard Service (VSAT) chief Rustamas Liubajevas told TV3 News.

“I won’t disclose [the number of troops] for now, that’s not public information, but Lithuanian troops will assist us in securing sections of several frontier stations,” he added.

The VSAT reported on Thursday morning that Lithuanian border guards pushed back 48 people attempting to cross the border irregularly over the past 24 hours.

Latvia reported 56 border crossing attempts on Wednesday. Poland denied entry to 54 irregular migrants on Tuesday.

Over 680 migrants have been barred from entering Lithuania from Belarus at non-designated places so far this year, according to the VSAT. A total of 1,002 migrants were denied entry in 2024.
