The Ministry of Health has announced the death of a 97-year old person after contracting coronavirus. The elder was receiving treatmeant at Karin Grech Hospital. He had been confirmed as positive to the virus on 17th May.

He is the seventh person to die from COVID-19 in Malta. However, yesterday evening, Minister Chris Fearne said in person that in the case of the sixth victim, coronavirus was only a secondary cause leading to this person’s death.

Data by the health authorities yesterday gave little room for new discussion, with no new cases discovered and no recoveries reported, with the number of active cases standing still at 120.

Instead, debate raged about celebrations held the previous day by Floriana FC fans who gathered in their hundreds in the Granaries to celebrate a title after a 27-year absence. Prof Charmaine Gauci in replies to various queries by the local media expressed her disappointment and concern at the risks that such gathering might have created. As she returns to the media briefing table this afternoon, we can safely expect more questions in this regard.

DOI says infection rate down to 0.6%

According to DOI data, the rate of those positive for the virus since the start of Covid-19 in our country has continued to decrease. In the first month, when the first case emerged on 7 March, 2.7% of those who were tested were positive. Between 7 April and 7 May, the second month, the rate fell to 0.7%, while now the rate is 0.6% during a time when the first set of restrictive measures have been removed in order for the country to return to normality.

The health authorities are soon expected to launch a chain of tests within the community in order to see how strong immunity against Covid-19 is among the population. In fact, the authorities have prepared an analysis regarding how precise and valid these antibodies tests are and have already started using these tests in a practical manner. The
strategy will be that health officials will analyse different population groups to measure the level of immunity.
