The Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) formally launched a study into gender disparity at their conference ‘Inspire to Achieve’, which was dedicated to women.
Conducted by Misco, the study will focus on gender-based pay gap within the accounting profession.
Maria Cauchi Delia, CEO of the MIA, said the organisation will press for progress by investigating the issue of pay gap, establishing clear criteria to foster achievements and develop methods for creating further participation. The conference was attended by leading and inspiring women who shared their achievements and vision with those present.
MIA president William Spiteri Bailey expressed his concern that notwithstanding the enormous changes in the rate of employment, the highest positions within companies are still elusive for women. He said that the Institute of Accountants is committed to keep building on the values of equality, empowerment and achieving.
President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca pointed out in her address that women on average work six hours longer per week than men but have fewer paid hours.
She highlighted a European Commission report which shows that women across the European Union are a long way off from achieving full economic independence.
“In comparison to men, women tend to be employed less; they are employed in lower-paid sectors; and, in addition, face fewer and slower promotions,” she added.
