Malta: Missing mother and daughter found dead in a field in a suspected double homicide – Relative apprehended by police – UPDATED

The older woman’s son has been arrested and is the prime suspect of the murder of the two women who were found dead after going missing since Tuesday.

The Times reports quotes police sources had noted that the horrific incident marks another violent chapter in the family’s history as in 2005, Marija Lourdes’s husband Paul had been jailed for 31 years for having shot and killed a couple who lived next door to them in Għaxaq.

TVM reports that the mother and daughter were killed at another location, after which their bodies were taken to the field.

MaltaToday says that they were found shot and partially buried in a field after a search of the rural area between Santa Lucija and Gudja undertaken after various individuals were questioned by the police. A family member is reported to have provided the police with information, leading to the discovery of the body.

The Malta Independent reports that the man suspected of murdering his mother and sister was described by neighbours as a kind and quiet man, always with his head hung low.

Newsbook reports that Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo is leading the inquest and has appointed a number of experts to assist her in the case.


Earlier: Two women who had been missing since Tuesday have been found dead, in a field in an area between the limits of Santa Lucija and Għaxaq.

The police suspect the case is a double homicide.

Marija Lourdes Bonnici and her daughter Angele Bonnici were reported missing and were last seen on 26 March at around 7am at their residence in Ghaxaq.

The son of one of the women has been apprehended by the police according to reports in the media.

In a statement, the police said that they had questioned several people in connection with the two women’s disappearance. A person close to the two women had given them information which led officers to a rural area between Santa Luċija and Gudja.

After searching in darkness, police officers eventually found the two women’s lifeless corpses in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A magisterial inquiry is underway.
