The accused appeared in court in a suit and had his left little finger bandaged.
The man was charged over the stabbing of Chantelle Chetcuti who succumbed to the injuries within 24 hours. The alleged aggressor is the victim’s former partner.
The woman who was stabbed in Zabbar on Sunday night died in hospital on Monday evening, the police said.
The woman, Chantelle Chetcuti, aged 34, had been stabbed in the head by a man during an argument and was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Chantelle Chetcuti’s former long-time partner and father of their two daughters, Justin Borg, a fruit and vegetable hawker, is being questioned over the case which now became the first murder of 2020.
The police said that the victim and the man had an altercation inside the St Patricks football club bar.
The argument carried on outside the bar where Mr Borg allegedly hit the woman repeatedly with a kitchen knife and then fled the scene. The stabbing happened outside on the corner with Triq is-Santwarju.
When the police arrived in Triq il-Kbira just after 8.15pm, they found her lying motionless in a pool of blood. The knife was still embedded in her neck. She was rushed to hospital and immediately operated on. She also suffered superficial wounds to her abdomen.
The man escaped from the scene of the crime but gave himself up at police headquarters in Floriana. Police said the man was treated for minor injuries in hospital and taken under arrest at the depot. Drugs were found on the man.
