EU Report Highlights Progress but Raises Corruption Concerns in Malta
Malta has improved resources dedicated to tackling corruption but continues to struggle to secure a strong record of final court judgments in corruption cases, according to the European Commission’s 2026 Rule of Law Report. The report noted that Malta scored 49 out of 100 in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index, placing it among six EU countries below the 50-point mark. While acknowledging increased staffing within the Police Force and the Office of the Attorney General, the Commission said this has yet to translate into a robust track record of concluded corruption cases. It also highlighted shortcomings in conflict of interest verification, the absence of progress on lobbying reforms and delays in updating asset declaration rules for ministers and MPs. Government Reaffirms Support for Young People Leaving Residential Care
The government will continue supporting young people as they move from residential care towards independent living, Prime Minister Robert Abela said during a visit to The Manor residence in Sliema. Accompanied by Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon and Foundation for Social Welfare Services chief executive Alfred Grixti, Abela met professionals working with residents and discussed the aftercare services available. He reiterated the government’s commitment to guaranteeing access to education and training, immediate accommodation and financial support for young adults leaving care once they reach the age of 18. The Manor, operated by Fondazzjoni Sebħ, provides a home environment where residents can gradually build independent lives while continuing to receive professional support. The government said it is investing €28.4 million this year in public social agreements with voluntary organisations, almost €3 million more than last year, to strengthen services for vulnerable people. Alex Borg Says Leadership Vote Gives PN Strong Mandate for Renewal
Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg has described the overwhelming support he received in the party’s leadership confirmation vote as a clear mandate to continue the PN’s renewal process. Borg secured 1,459 votes in favour from the General Council, with 27 members voting against. Speaking on NET TV, he thanked councillors for their confidence and said the party would continue strengthening its presence in communities while presenting itself as a credible alternative government. He criticised ongoing power cuts, arguing they reflected years of inadequate infrastructure planning, and called for long-term investment in Malta’s electricity network. Borg also raised concerns over public transport, saying commuters’ daily experiences did not match government statistics and urging improved planning, more buses and a structural mass transit solution. He said the PN would remain active throughout the summer despite Parliament’s recess, continuing to present proposals and hold the government to account. (The Malta Independent)
