Fatal crash involves PM’s parents
A woman died and another is in critical condition after a head-on collision in Fgura on Sunday involving Prime Minister Robert Abela’s parents. Former president George Abela and his wife Margaret were among those injured and are in stable condition, though certified as suffering grievous injuries. The crash occurred at around 3.30pm on Triq Hompesh. A 71-year-old woman from Żabbar died shortly after, while the 23-year-old driver, also from Żabbar, remains in critical condition. PM Abela defends planning reform
Prime Minister Robert Abela defended the recently-announced controversial planning reform, calling it a reform of justice and empathy. He dismissed critics as misinformed or acting in bad faith. Originally limited to appeals, the reform has widened significantly. Civil society warned it favours developers and limits challenges. Abela cited a family affected by a revoked permit and confirmed illegal developments built before 1994 will be eligible for full regularisation under the extended 2016 scheme.He also spoke of reforms to the regularisation of illegal buildings. Developments from before 1994 will now be eligible for full regularisation through payment under the extended 2016 scheme. (Maltatoday)

Grech urges rethink of planning reform
Opposition Leader Bernard Grech called for the planning reform to undergo public consultation and accused Prime Minister Abela of serving powerful interests. He warned against rushing it through Parliament and urged a full debate, even beyond the summer recess. Grech criticised the government for making planning decisions untouchable once approved, and said the PN supports stronger rights, including environmental protections in the Constitution.
