PN, PL trade war of words after Abela votes for increased defence spending

The Labour Party and the Nationalist Party shared contrasting views on the Prime Minister’s vote, on behalf of Malta, on increasing the EU’s spending on defence.
The PN said that despite PM Robert Abela lying and accusing the PN of being in favour of war these last few weeks, Abela has still voted in favour of the EU’s substantial increase in defence budget. In a counter-statement, the Labour Party said Abela followed through on Maltese interests he brought up locally, by negotiating in favour of them in Brussels said the PL. In particular, he lobbied in defence of specific clauses that respect Malta’s constitutional neutrality and refused to invest in arms, even if the rest of Europe is doing so. (The Malta Independent)

Vote on Spiteri Debono possibly on Wednesday – reports

Myriam Spiteri Debono might be endorsed as the next President by parliament as early as Wednesday. Proposed by Prime Minister Robert Abela, the former Speaker is believed to have garnered favorable reception from Opposition leader Bernard Grech. Sources familiar with the discussions have indicated that there are signs pointing towards a motion being presented in parliament on Wednesday for the appointment of Myriam Spiteri Debono as president, with the aim of having her officially installed on April 4, coinciding with the end of George Vella’s term. Under the constitutional amendments made in 2020, the new president requires a two-thirds parliamentary majority for appointment. (Maltatoday)

Gozo match in alleged corruption case

Authorities are currently probing a Gozo premier football match due to alleged match-fixing activities. The match under scrutiny involved Nadur Youngsters and Qala Saints, two leading teams in the GFA Division One, which took place at the Gozo Stadium last Sunday and ended in a 1-1 draw. This match held significant importance as both Nadur and Qala were joint leaders in the GFA Division with 35 points each. According to reports, an individual approached a player from Nadur Youngsters, purportedly attempting to persuade them to manipulate the match outcome. Police reportedly possess several recordings pertinent to this investigation. In a statement, Qala denied any involvement in the matter. (Times of Malta/Newsbook)
