PM defends CBM Governor, sees no reason for resignation

Prime Minister Robert Abela said that that he will not dismiss Edward Scicluna, despite the Central Bank Governor facing criminal charges related to fraud and misappropriation. When questioned on Tuesday about his plans regarding Scicluna’s roles as bank governor and board member of the Malta Financial Services Authority, Abela confirmed his intention to retain him. “The answer is yes,” Abela affirmed. Abela defended his decision by stating that Edward Scicluna starts with the presumption of innocence. He also mentioned that Scicluna falls into the category of individuals he previously mentioned, expressing his commitment to defend and support those who have served diligently for many years and have been present during critical moments for the country. Russians with Maltese passports buying property in Dubai – reports
A recent data leak has exposed the practices of affluent Russians who hold Maltese citizenship and establish residences in the tax haven of Dubai. Known as “Dubai Unlocked,” the leak showcases four Russians who acquired Maltese passports. This dataset encompasses extensive information about hundreds of thousands of properties in Dubai, including details regarding ownership or utilization, primarily spanning from 2020 to 2022. Among the names disclosed in the leak, two individuals have strong ties to Grigory Anikeev, a wealthy Russian MP subject to sanctions. (Maltatoday)

NGOs seek national unity in protest calling for justice

The push for national unity amidst the ongoing political turmoil is gaining traction as civil society groups prepare to unite in a protest orchestrated by Repubblika and backed by a coalition of NGOs. Scheduled for Thursday evening, the demonstration aims to promote transparency, accountability, and justice within Malta’s governance, particularly as the Government grapples with serious criminal charges against several prominent Labour Party members. A collaborative effort involving UHM, Aditus, KSU (The University of Malta Student’s Union), Occupy Justice, Collective Voice, Fondazione Falcone, SOS Malta, the National Youth Council, Manueldelia.com, the ICT Students’ Association, Medical Biochemistry Studies Assessment, the Media & Knowledge Sciences Association, JEF Malta, SDM (Moviment Studencti Demokristjani Maltin), PEN Malta, and Graffiti, has united to support Repubblika’s call for a national protest.
