PM claims PN wants to stoke tensions during Muscat arraignment

PM Robert Abela alleged the Nationalist Party is preparing a “trap” for Labour supporters who are expected to turn up next week to show their support for Joseph Muscat. Abela stated that on the day of a “solidarity meeting” for Muscat outside the Valletta law courts, the Opposition seeks to “stoke tensions”. The protest is scheduled for next Tuesday, roughly coinciding with the arraignment of former prime minister Muscat on accusations of corruption. When queried on Tuesday about their opinions of the demonstration, a number of Labour ministers refrained from officially endorsing it. Rather, they asked those present to keep their composure and vote Labour on June 8 in order to make their voices known. (Times of Malta)

Konrad Mizzi, Keith Schemrbi claim violation of rights

Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi claimed that the Attorney General and Police Commissioner have violated their rights as suspects, and sought to be given quick access to all of the information that is against them. Like the former Prime Minister, they stand accused with money laundering, bribery, and trading in influence amongst a raft of other charges. Both of them said that while the nature of the charges against them demand a mandatory explanation from the suspect, nobody had ever spoken to them before the charges were filed and neither were they given “effective disclosure” by the prosecution. Archbishop calls for respect of institutions, decency during campaign

Archbishop Charles Scicluna acknowledged that political debate would naturally get more intense during an election campaign, but emphasised that all political discussions remain grounded in decency. “People must be properly informed and have peace of mind in order to make decisions,” he stated. He urged everyone to heed President Myriam Spiteri Debono’s recent call for caution and moderation so that the judiciary and courts might operate in a peaceful and calm environment. (Newsbook)
