Camilleri gets 40 years prison sentence for Kaya murder

Jeremie Camilleri, the man who confessed to the murder of Turkish interior designer Pelin Kaya has received a 40-year prison sentence, though the presiding judge expressed the opinion that the punishment should have been more severe. The man, a 34-year-old Maltese-French national residing in Lija, admitted guilt during the presentation of evidence in court last month. Camilleri collided with the 30-year-old victim using his BMW along Testaferrata Street, Gżira, shortly after she had celebrated her birthday on January 18, 2023. Madam Justice Consuelo Herrera said Camilleri had a “violent personality” and did not learn from previous convictions that involved suspended jail terms. (The Malta Independent)

Surge in property sales in February – MDA

The Malta Development Association (MDA) has reported that the property market experienced remarkable expansion last month, February. According to a statement, there was a significant surge in the number of signed agreements and the associated income. In comparison to February of the preceding year, the number of signed agreements increased from 1,318 to 1,420, marking an 8% rise. Furthermore, the corresponding income from these transactions saw a 9% growth, reaching €416,571,905, which is an increase of over €35,972,769. The MDA affirmed its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the property market. (TVM)

Man jailed six months for match fixing

24-year-old Rudgear Scerri, who was a committee member of Attard Football Club at the time of his arraignment in January 2021, has been sentenced to six months in jail and a lifelong interdiction for match-fixing. His sentence was increased on appeal. In the initial proceedings, Scerri, who was 21 at the time, faced charges related to his involvement in manipulating a sporting event, failure to report information to the police authorities, and engaging in unlicensed gaming by accepting bets. He entered a guilty plea. Following a tip-off, the police raided the residence he shared with his girlfriend, leading to his arrest. The raid resulted in the confiscation of €20,000 to €30,000, along with electronic devices. (Times of Malta)
