Five persons arrested as police dismantles drug trafficking ring
Four men and a woman, all foreign nationals, were arrested by the police in an operation aimed at dismantling a drug trafficking ring. The arrests followed weeks of investigation into drug importation and trafficking, the police said in a statement on Tuesday. Last Sunday, seven kilogrammes of cocaine were seized from a car in Żabbar. Further searches in residences in Żabbar and Marsascala uncovered additional cocaine, six kilogrammes of cannabis, firearms, ammunition, drug trafficking equipment, a money-counting machine, a significant amount of cash, and false documents. Renewable sources contribute 11% of energy supply
Statistics from the National Office of Statistics indicate that Malta’s electricity supply increased by 1.3% last year, with emissions from electricity generation rising by 0.5% compared to 2022. Energy production from power stations has grown, while electricity imports via the interconnector have remained stable. Peak electricity demand occurred in July and August, with Delimara power stations generating nearly 68% of the supply. Renewable sources, primarily solar panels, contributed about 11%, and the interconnector accounted for just over 21% of consumption in Malta and Gozo. Overall, power generation increased by 1.5%, renewable energy by more than 7%, and electricity imports via the interconnector from Italy rose by 0.3%. (TVM)
New head for Maltese Language Centre as Norma Saliba moves to Labour
Dr Maris Camilleri has been appointed Acting CEO of the Maltese Language Centre by Minister for National Heritage, Owen Bonnici, replacing Norma Saliba, who contested the Labour Party Presidency earlier this year. Camilleri, currently a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Essex, has conducted linguistic research in England, Austria, and Malta, and provided consultancy services to the Centre since early this year. The Ministry thanked Saliba for her work in establishing the Centre and promoting the Maltese language. Consultations with the National Council for the Maltese Language will follow. In a separate statement, the Labour Party said that Norma Saliba is set to become the Labour Party’s new head of communications and spokesperson. (Maltatoday)
