Malta petitions in focus as European Parliament debates energy, trade and AI rules

Malta is set to feature prominently in this week’s European Parliament proceedings, with two petitions under scrutiny during meetings of the Committee on Petitions.

Today, MEPs will hear a petition on Malta’s implementation of EU rules on urban wastewater treatment, in the presence of the petitioner. A second Malta-related item follows on Tuesday, when a study assessing the country’s application of EU noise management legislation will be presented to the committee.

The Malta-focused discussions come alongside a packed plenary session in Brussels, where lawmakers will turn their attention to major economic and geopolitical challenges.

On Wednesday, MEPs will review the outcome of the recent EU summit with António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, before debating how to safeguard energy supply and price stability amid ongoing global tensions.

Economic priorities will also dominate Thursday’s agenda, with votes scheduled on EU-US trade arrangements linked to the so-called Turnberry deal, as well as reforms to return rules for irregular migrants.

MEPs are also expected to adopt their position on simplifying artificial intelligence legislation, including provisions banning certain high-risk applications, and to approve new measures aimed at improving water quality across the bloc.

Meanwhile, financial stability will be in focus with a vote on new tools to manage failing banks and better protect taxpayers and depositors.
